National Elementary and Junior Honor Society
Induction

On Wednesday, May 20th, the St. Patrick School Chapters of the National Elementary and Junior Honor Society inducted its inaugural class of members.  51 students in grades 5 through 8 joined their parents, advisors, teachers and family to celebrate academic excellence.

The National Junior Honor Society (NJHS) is the nation's premier organization established to recognize outstanding middle level students. More than just an honor roll, the NJHS serves to honor those students who have demonstrated excellence in the areas of Scholarship, Leadership, Service, and Character, and Citizenship for NJHS. These characteristics have been associated with membership in the organization since its beginning in 1929.

The National Elementary Honor Society (NEHS) was established in 2008 by the National Association of Secondary School Principals (NASSP) in cooperation with the National Association of Elementary School Principals(NAESP) to recognize elementary students in both public and non-public elementary schools for their outstanding academic achievement and demonstrated personal responsibility, to provide meaningful service to the school and community, and to develop essential leadership skills in the students of elementary schools.  St. Patrick's chapter is one of the first schools to establish a chapter of the National Elementary Honor Society.

The evening began with an introduction to the Honor Society by advisor and 7th grade teacher Mr. Charles Topham.  The ceremony opened with an invocation by St. Patrick Parish's Deacon Frank Dello Russo.  A history of the National Elementary and Junior Honor Society was read by sixth grade teacher and advisor Mrs. Joanne Anderson.  Students then lit candles to symbolize Service, Character, Scholarship, Leadership and Citizenship and read passages introducing each quality.  The Honor Society pledge was administered by Mr. Charles Topham.

After the awarding of certificates, Mr. Arthur Swanson, Principal of St. Patrick School spoke to the students about how proud he was of their academic achievement.  He thanked parents and teachers for their dedication and help in teaching students to value scholarship and leadership.  He told the children that he expected them to continue to strive for excellence and to be leaders in school and the community.  At the conclusion of the ceremony, students filed out to a rousing round of applause from the audience.  They enjoyed a reception in their honor with cake and other goodies.
