MANGUITO COMES TO VISIT

On January 30th, the students of Saint Patrick School were able to experience the joyous music of Latin America including the rumba, bomba, plena, and Dominican merengue.  Five internationally known Latin American musicians, known as MANGUITO, took the students on an interactive musical tour of the Carribbean by playing the rythms of Puerto Rico, Cuba and the Dominican Republic using a variety of musical instruments.   Students got involved by singing and playing the instruments right along with Manguito.  Also exciting was Saint Patrick's own Ms. Erin Golden and 7th grader Jackie Tarani, members of the Saint Patrick ballroom dancing club, showing the student body how to salsa dance!

SANTA COMES TO TOWN!

The students at Saint Patrick School were delighted by a very special visitor on Tuesday, December 20th.  Santa Claus took time out of his very busy schedule to greet all students in grade Pre-K to 8 with words of Christmas Cheer and candy canes.  Students sang songs with Santa and told him what they wanted for Christmas.  The students of Saint Patrick School thank dear old Saint Nicholas for coming to town!

STONEHAM POLICE MAKE A VISIT

On Monday, December 19th, Saint Patrick School 6th, 7th and 8th graders were visited by Stoneham Police Officers.   Officers Tony Kranefuss and Paul Norton took time from their busy schedules to speak to the middle schoolers about the dangers of substance abuse.   The officers were careful to talk the students about gateway drugs like marijuana. They also discussed new trends such as abusing over the counter medicines. There was a question and answer period where students could share their feelings and gain more insight into these dangerous drugs. The officers were adamant that students must be strong enough to say no and walk away from situations that include illegal substances. The Saint Patrick School community is very grateful to these officers and the Stoneham Police department for helping our students deal with such important issues.

THANKSGIVING FEAST

2nd and 3rd Graders at Saint Patrick School celebrated the Thanksgiving holiday with a gathering of Pilgrims and Indians.  The Pilgrims were portrayed by 2nd graders in costume and 3rd graders were members of the Native American tribe the Wampanoags.  Pilgrims and Indians met and exchanged greetings with each other.  Pilgrims read poems of thanks and the Native Americans greeted the settlers with pictographs and words of friendship.  Thanks was given for a bountiful harvest and a "feast" of many good things like cranberry and pumpkin breads, popcorn and fruits, bread and cheeses.

Happy Thanksgiving to all!

CLASSROOM BLESSING

Mrs. Ethel Holland's 5th grade class recently welcomed Deacon Frank DelloRusso for a classroom re-dedication blessing.  5A's classroom was moved from the 2nd floor of Msgr. Sexton Hall to the first floor this summer.  Previously, the space was the teacher's room, although in the past it had been a classroom.  Mrs. Holland invited Deacon Frank to bless the new classroom and re-dedicate the space for learning.  Deacon Frank sprinkled holy water over the students, teacher, and classroom walls.  He also sprinkled holy water on the classroom statue of the Blessed Virgin Mary and the the classroom crucifix.  God Bless 5A!

BENJAMIN FRANKLIN COMES
TO SAINT PATRICK SCHOOL

The students and staff at Saint Patrick School welcomed a special guest on Tuesday, November 8th as part of our 2011-2012 Enrichment Program.  Benjamin Franklin stopped by to talk to students about his life and adventures with science.  Mr. Franklin told students about how he invented the swim fins so he could swim faster.  He spoke of how he learned to be a printer and writer.  He regaled them with tales of how he loved to invent things like the Franklin Stove and an electricity machine.

Students were excited to ask Mr. Franklin questions and to take part in some of his experiments.  It was so much fun to see history come alive!

Traveling Teddies!

Every year, 4th graders at Saint Patrick School bid a fond farewell to their traveling teddy bears.  The adventurous teddy bears take a cross country (and sometimes cross continental) trek all around the United States.  The Teddies send post cards and pictures back to students as they make their way around the country.  The 4th graders, who are studying geography, keep track of the places the teddy bears visit on a large map.  They chart the mileage and learn about all the different cities and cultures the bears visit.  The bears will return from their travels in April and all the data will be compiled into a final project.

Each year the Stoneham branch of the US Post Office sends a special truck to get the bears off on their journey.  After a short prayer, the intrepid teddy bears are loaded into the truck and waved off by students, faculty, family and friends.  We're looking forward to finding out all about their travels.  Bon Voyage!

The Great Pumpkin Visits Saint Patrick School!

The Great Pumpkin came to visit Saint Patrick School Pre-Kindergarten and Kindergarten classes on October 25th.  The children were treated to Mr. Swanson reading Charles Schultz's "It's the Great Pumpkin Charlie Brown" story and then were taken on a search for the Great Pumpkin's pumpkin patch.  Mr. Swanson assured the excited students that somewhere at Saint Patrick School, the Great Pumpkin had created a pumpkin patch.  Eager children and their 5th and 6th Grade buddies found the pumpkin patch in front of Father Millerick Hall.  Delighted students were treated to their very own special "Great Pumpkin" pumpkin.  What a wonderful way to start the Halloween season!

ST. PATRICK SCHOOL ENRICHMENT PROGRAM
2010/2011

Our first enrichment program for the 2010/2011 school year was WINGMASTERS.  WINGMASTERS is a partnership of two people dedicated to increasing public understanding and appreciation of North American birds of prey.  Julie Anne Collier and Jim Parks are both licensed raptor rehabilitators based in Massachusetts. Together they care for injured birds of prey.  Most birds they rehabilitate can ultimately be released back into the wild, but in some cases the birds are left permanently handicapped.  Julie and Him are further licensed to provide a home for these raptors and to use them for educational programs.

Since 1994 WINGMASTERS has presented over 5,000 programs at school, libraries and museums throughout New England. Birds of prey are know as raptors and they are hunting birds characterized by hooked beaks and powerful grabbing feet armed with sharp talons.  Raptors can boast the best eyesight and the sharpest hearing in the animal kingdom.  Raptors include eagles, hawks, falcons and owls.  This presentation incorporates five live birds and gives an overview of these different categories.  The program is designed to explain predation, the birds place at the top of the food web, their different hunting adaptations and the status in a rapidly changing world.  Because many birds of prey are declining in numbers, this presentation also features one or more of the endangered raptors that we care for and explains why these species face an uncertain future.

This program was presented on October 12th in Our Lady of Providence Hall to grades PreK-8.
