Students waiting for their teddies to return

The Teddies are Heading Home!

Grade 4 students from Ms. Riley's and Ms. Beebe's classes are excitedly awaiting the return of their traveling Teddy Bears.  The bears have been on a cross-country tour since last October and are scheduled to return home to Saint Patrick School in mid-Spring.  As the bears visit different states, their host families enter data about that state into the bears' journal which accompanies them from state to state. The host family also sends a post card and other memorabilia about the states back to the student.  In this way, the children are able to track their bear's journey, create mileage graphs for Mathematics, and obtain information about each state as part of their Social Studies requirements. When the bears return, each student will send thank you letters to the host families as part of their Language Arts curriculum.

St. Patrick School Welcomes the Energy Wizard!

The 4th grade students at Saint Patrick School were treated to the presentation, "The Magic of Saving Power."  This was a magical, spellbinding, enlightening and interactive experience on the benefits of conserving energy.  The program was sponsored by NSTAR Electric.  Thanks to Joules, master magician and the official NSTAR ENERGY WIZARD, the students learned the importance of conserving energy.  In addition, the students identified which appliances qualify for an ENERGY STAR efficiency rating and what is meant by a CFL (Compact Florescent Light bulb).

St. Patrick Quiz Bowl Team Makes Championship Round at Annual MC Quiz Bowl Tournament

St. Patrick's 2009 Quiz Bowl team posted incredible results at Malden Catholic's 16th Annual Quiz Bowl Tournament on Saturday, January 31st.  Fifteen 6th, 7th and 8th graders made up three teams competing for academic honors.  Quiz Bowl contestants compete in timed question and answer rounds and must answer a variety of questions in topics like Math, Science, Literature, Spelling, History, Geography and Pop Culture.

St. Patrick School entered two teams in the Lancer Division and one team in the Malden Catholic Division.  In the Lancer Division, St. Patrick's Lancer Team B consisting of Conor Dolan as team spokesperson, Brian Bialock, Madeline Liakos, Erin Roche and Kathleen Leahy won two of their three question rounds.  St. Patrick's Lancer Team A headed up by Nicholas Coccoluto as spokesperson, Brian Cummings, Austin Wolfe, Alexis Bromander and Sean Moynihan won one question round and lost one of their other contests by just a single question.  These students worked together as a team and individually to help St. Patrick's gain enough points to push through to the Championship round.

In the Malden Catholic Division, our team was made up of team spokesperson Kyril Wolfe, Emily DelloRusso, Kevin O'Neill, Daniel Daye, and David Vaccaro.  This team of veterans and one 7th grader won all its preliminary rounds and represented St. Patrick School as one of the day's three top scoring teams on stage in the Quiz Bowl Championship round.  Competition was fierce between Winthrop Middle School, St. Patrick School and St. Agnes School.  In the end, St. Patrick's took home the 3rd place trophy behind Winthrop Middle School and 1st place finisher St. Agnes School.

Competing individually in the Wild Card Round were Brian Cummings, Kyril Wolfe, Erin Roche, David Vaccaro and Conor Dolan.  The Wild Card Round involved written answers to question on the topics of Presidential Inaugural Traditions, The Works of John Steinbeck, Disney Princesses, The Moons of Jupiter and Abraham Lincoln.  David Vaccaro got a near perfect score answering questions on the Moons of Jupiter.

It was an amazing day for everyone involved.  The team moderators Jaymie Stuart Wolfe and Liz McNamara Liwo want to thank team members for their hard work all  year long.  We would also like to commend the team for pulling together, having fun and making new friendships.  You made  yourself and St. Patrick School very proud.  We're looking forward to next year!

Third Grader Wins Epilepsy Contest

Third Grade students in Mrs. Barbara Mitrano's classroom recently read a story about a young boy named Benjamin who was living with epilepsy.  The children then composed their own stories about why Benjamin was their friend. The stories were entered into a contest sponsored by the Epilepsy Chapter of Wakefield. Juliana Wolfe was selected to receive a $50.00 Savings Bond for her entry. Pictured are : Ms. Barbara Mitrano, third grade teacher; Juliana Wolfe, and Mr. Anthony Cerullo of the Epilepsy Chapter of Wakefield.

Pictured are children from Ms. Driscoll's Kindergarten class alongside students from Malden Catholic (MC) High School.  The children gladly gave up a gift from their own Christmas wish list for someone less fortunate. MC Campus Minister and teacher, Mrs. Driscoll, recently visited the Kindergarten class along with several students from MC. The little ones donated a bag full of gifts which the students from MC will distribute as part of a service project.

CAPOEIRA ANGOLA COMES TO ST. PATRICK SCHOOL

On Monday, November 24, 2008, the performers of Capoeira Angola came to Our Lady of Providence Hall and performed for the students of St. Patrick School.  Capoeria is a 400 year old martial art that blends music, dance, singing and acrobatics.  Originating among slaves, this martial art form was brought to Brazil from African nations such as Angola, Congo and Guinea.  This lively and entertaining show highlighted performers drawing on a lifetime of experience and practice, vibrantly demonstrating forms of capoeira, maculele, samba and their origins.  Their movements are smooth, seemingly effortless and highly acrobatic.  The performance weaves all these elements together with a sense of humor and play, making the show accessible and fun.  Capoeira is a testimony to the indomitable spirit, ingenuity and unique expression of Brazilian culture.

Students enjoyed the spirited performances, dance and martial moves.  They joined the fun by dancing and drumming.  Everyone who attended was astounded by the skill of the performers.  Enjoy the slide show!

Farewell and Godspeed Tiny Teddies!
Saint Patrick School
Traveling Teddy Bears
Social Studies Project
Grade 4

After naming their Teddy Bears and packing their suitcases with letters of introduction and diaries for host families to complete, Saint Patrick School fourth graders bid a sad farewell to their Teddies as they were placed in the Post Office truck to begin their cross-country journey that will carry them to the far corners of the United States.  Over the next several months, the Bears will visit special locations in different states and begin to understand what life is like in different parts of our great country.  While the 4th graders in Mrs. Riley and Mrs. Beebe’s classes will miss their Teddy Bears, they will be updated about their adventures through postcards.  As part of this interdisciplinary project the children are responsible for the following:

•    preparing a traveling box for Teddy
•    writing a report about the first state their bear would visit
•    preparing an autobiography which accompanied their Teddy
•    locating and marking the states visited on the map
•    preparing graphs indicating the distances traveled
•    displaying the postcards received
•    keeping classmates updated on Teddy’s travels

Forty Teddy Bears will travel over a combined 40,000 miles on the first leg of their cross country journey and they, along with the 4th grade students, would like to thank all those who made this exciting adventure possible:

  • Saint Patrick School Mother’s Club & P.T.O. who provided the Teddy Bears
  • Fr. Mark for his blessing for a safe journey;
  • classroom teachers Mrs. Riley and Mrs. Beebe
  • and a special Teddy Bear hug to the Representatives of the Stoneham branch of U.S. Post Office – Mr. Don Piscatelli, Mr. Pete Sands, and Mr. Joe Mangano.
